7 Mistakes To Avoid When Renting a Car

Your journey can be a lot easier and more exciting if you rent a car. Usually the process is straightforward and completed within a short time. But if you are not careful, these are the mistakes that cost renters money and goodwill.

1. Skipping the inspection

Walk the car before you drive away and photograph every panel, the wheels, the windscreen and the interior. Note anything already marked on the rental agreement. Five minutes with a phone camera is the single best protection against being charged for damage you did not cause — and it protects the rental company just as much as it protects you.

2. Ignoring the fuel policy

Full-to-full is the cleanest arrangement: you collect a full tank and return one. Prepaid fuel almost always costs more unless you return the car empty, which few people manage. Whichever applies, keep the final receipt from a station near the drop-off point.

3. Assuming your insurance carries over

Personal policies and credit-card cover vary enormously, and exotic and luxury vehicles are frequently excluded by value. Call your insurer with the actual make and model before you book, not after. Ask specifically about comprehensive and collision limits and what deductible applies.

4. Underestimating mileage

Most exotic rentals include a daily mileage allowance, and overage is charged per mile. Map your route before booking. If you are planning a longer drive, it is nearly always cheaper to buy additional miles up front than to settle the overage afterwards.

5. Booking late

Specific cars are single units, not a category. There is one of each in the fleet, and weekends, holidays and event weekends go first. If a particular car matters to your plans, reserve it as early as you can rather than hoping it is free.

6. Not reading the driver requirements

Every driver must normally be listed on the agreement and present a valid, non-expired licence with a name matching the booking exactly. Adding a second driver at the counter is usually simple; discovering at collection that your passenger cannot legally drive is not.

7. Leaving pick-up and drop-off to chance

Delivery to an airport, hotel or venue is often available for a fee, and it is worth pricing against the hassle of collecting in person. Confirm the exact address and time in writing, and build in a buffer either side.
