Car rental has become a normal part of travel, and its popularity has generated a fair number of myths. These misconceptions lead to unnecessary expense and avoidable frustration. Here are the ones worth clearing up.

“Booking at the counter is cheaper”

Almost never. Walk-up pricing reflects whatever is left, and for specialist vehicles there is usually nothing left at all. Each exotic is a single car, not a category with a dozen units behind it. Booking ahead is both cheaper and the only reliable way to get a particular vehicle.

“My credit card covers everything”

Card cover is real but frequently limited by vehicle value, and exotic and luxury cars are commonly excluded outright. It also tends to be secondary cover, meaning it pays after your own policy. Check the actual terms against the actual car before relying on it.

“The deposit is a fee”

It is a hold, not a charge. It is released after the car is returned and inspected. What matters is that the amount is genuinely available on your card at collection — a hold that fails will stop the rental regardless of what you have paid.

“Any licence will do”

The licence must be valid, non-expired, and the name must match the rental agreement exactly. International licences are widely accepted, but the name-matching rule still applies, and every driver must be listed on the agreement — not just the person who paid.

“Unlimited mileage is standard”

It is standard on economy rentals and unusual on exotics. Specialist vehicles almost always carry a daily allowance with a per-mile charge beyond it. This is not a hidden fee, but it is one people forget to ask about.

“Prepaid fuel saves money”

Only if you return the car empty, which almost nobody does. Full-to-full is the cheaper option for most renters. Keep the receipt from a station near the drop-off.

“All rental companies are the same”

They differ most in the things you notice late: whether the car you booked is the car you get, whether someone answers the phone when plans change, and how the company behaves over a disputed charge. Those are worth more than a small difference in daily rate.
