Match the car to the occasion

A two-seat supercar is superb for a photoshoot and impractical for an airport run with luggage. A chauffeured saloon suits a wedding party better than something you have to park yourself. Start from what the day actually requires and let that narrow the list, rather than starting from the car you like most in photographs.

Check what is genuinely included

Ask what the daily mileage allowance is, what happens if you exceed it, whether a second driver is included, and what the deposit is. A lower headline rate with a tight mileage cap can easily cost more than a higher rate with a generous one.

Understand the insurance position early

This is where most bookings stall. You will typically need your own comprehensive and collision cover at a stated minimum, and exotic vehicles are often excluded from standard policies by value. Confirm with your insurer using the exact make and model, well before the collection date.

Look at the fleet, not the website

Photographs are easy. Ask whether the specific car you want is the one you will receive, what year and specification it is, and what colour. A reputable operator will tell you plainly and will say so if the car you want is already committed.

Consider delivery

Having the car brought to a hotel, venue or airport can be worth more than the fee, particularly if the occasion has a schedule. Agree the exact address and time in writing and allow a margin either side.

Read the cancellation terms

Plans change. Understand before you pay what happens if yours do — how much notice is required, what is refundable, and whether the booking can be moved rather than cancelled. This is the term people skip and later regret.
